Common Technical Issues: YAMAHA XJ700X Maxim X

BRAND: YAMAHA
MODEL: XJ700X Maxim X
YEARS: 86
CATEGORY: MOTORCYCLE

TECHNICAL ISSUE DETAILS
Yamaha XJ models use an excited field alternator. The field coil inside the alternator is switched on and off by the regulator circuit, the other lead to the field coil goes battery positive. This system basically works just like a car alternator. Under the side cover you will find the regulator/rectifier. Output from the rectifier circuit is fed to the battery, and the regulation circuit turns the field coil inside the alternator on and off. Switching of the field coil is on the NEGATIVE side, the other side of the field coil is connected to battery positive through the ignition switch. Battery charging problems on these models are typically caused by: 1) BAD CONNECTIONS. These bikes are fairly old and you will need to ensure each and every electrical connection is good. 2)The OEM regulator/rectifier is OFTENTIMES bad. Replace it with the correct Electronicamotos part#. On these bikes the stator and field coil typically do not fail.
