Common Technical Issues: YAMAHA YZ125

BRAND: YAMAHA
MODEL: YZ125
YEARS: 85-86
CATEGORY: DIRT BIKE

TECHNICAL ISSUE DETAILS
This ignition system consists of two ignition source coils (commonly called the stator) that feed into a relatively simple CDI unit. The stator source coils slide into metal plates that fit tightly around the inner rotor which is mounted on the crankshaft. This ignition system does not have a pickup coil to trigger the CDI. The CDI is designed be triggered by the source coil output that it gets from the stator. The two source coils are connected in series (one low speed coil and one high speed coil), and output is fed to the CDI through three wire leads. Our replacement stator part#: ESC6162 Main causes for ignition failure: 1) Source coil (stator) failure. This is very common and either of the two source coils can fail because of age, heat and/or vibration. 2) CDI failure. Not as common as stator failure, but we do see it happen. NOTE: On small production runs in certain years Yamaha used a different vendor for their stators. There are TWO VARIATIONS on the standard setup: 1) A slightly larger hole distance between the mounting holes for the coils. You can install ESC6162 coils by turning the end holes in the coils into slots. With a Dremel tool you can slot the holes easily and the coils will install fine. 2) A mounting with FINGERS. The ESC6162 does not appear to fit, but can be made to fit by using a Dremel tool to cut out the MIDDLE Finger tab in the side plates. The ESC6162 coil set then fits fine.
